Chess Terms : Backward Pawn Explained
A backward pawn is a pawn that cannot be advanced because it would be captured, and cannot be protected by other pawns because there are no friendly pawns on adjacent files behind it. A backward pawn is typically a weakness because it is fixed on an open or semi-open file where it can be attacked by enemy pieces, particularly rooks. The square directly in front of a backward pawn often becomes a powerful outpost for the opponent.
