Chess Terms : Compensation Explained

Compensation

Compensation is the positional or dynamic advantage gained in return for a material deficit. A player who has sacrificed a pawn or piece may have compensation in the form of superior development, the initiative, attacking chances, or structural advantages. Whether compensation is sufficient for the material invested is a key evaluative question.
