Isolated Queen Pawn

The isolated queen pawn (IQP or isolani) is an isolated pawn on the d-file, one of the most important structural features in chess. The IQP arises in many openings, including the Queen's Gambit and French Defence. It offers dynamic play (control of e5 and c5, open c- and e-files for rooks, potential d4–d5 advance) but is a long-term weakness in the endgame (it cannot be defended by pawns and can be blockaded).
